Welcome to the world of an aspiring Irish writer, living in and loving New York City
SUNNYSIDE is an eclectic, leafy neighborhood in Queens, New York located just a few short subway stops away from Grand Central Station.
Immigrant families, young professionals, artists and musicians have all made their homes here attracted by the easy distance from Manhattan and surprisingly affordable property prices.
Over the past few years, a number of elegant new restaurants, coffee shops, beauty salons and bars have opened for business, sharing the busy sidewalks with time worn bodegas and discount supermarkets. Indeed, the appearance of the ubiquitous Starbucks and New York Sports Club franchises says it all.
Among other things, The Sunnysider would like to promote this vibrant, bohemian neighborhood and the creative people within it and, also, to celebrate the invaluable contribution that Irish immigrants are making to the artistic, musical and cultural landscape of New York City. Also included are some light-hearted essays about my own experiences living and working as a recent arrival to this wonderfully energetic and challenging town.
My purpose in creating this website and newsletter is to entertain, inform and perhaps at times amuse. I hope you enjoy reading it - whether you live in New York or not.
